Instructor: Bridget Miles
I am Mrs. Miles. I am married to a wonderful man named Michael and I have a step-daughter named Samantha.  I have three nephews who live in this area and a niece who lives in Charleston.  I have been teaching first grade for thirteen years with a master's degree in education.  I love teaching first graders and watching them grow academically.  They all have my heart.  It amazes me to see what knowledge they come to first grade with, and how much they have learned by the end of the school year.  I would like to welcome you to visit us in room 102 at any time.  You may contact me at school at (803) 532-4452 ext. 2102 or by email at bmiles@lex3.k12.sc.us

Welcome back; during Language Arts, we will be reading a story this week called, “Red Eyed Tree Frog.”  We will concentrate on the long –a vowel sound, including the –ay and -ai spellings.  We will review the long –e vowel sound with the CVCe spelling.  We will continue to work in our Guided Reading groups.  Our reading levels continue to move and change as a result of your continued support from home.  If you wish to discuss your child’s level, please feel free to call.  Ask your child what level he/she is reading on this week.  I have seen some nice progress lately.  In math, we will work on Addition and Subtraction using a Fact Table and coming up with Equivalent Names.  Thank you for all you do!

This week we will read a story in our reading series called “Eek! There’s a Mouse in the House!” found on p. 162.  We will work on long –e with CV (consonant/vowel), CVCe (consonant/vowel/consonant/silent –e), the ee vowel pair, and the –ea vowel pair spellings.  We will review words ending in –ft, -lk, and –nt.  Please make sure you are listening to your child read his/her leveled reader nightly and are signing the reading log.  We have had many coming in unsigned and want to be sure your child is practicing nightly.  Our first grade goal is for your child to be reading on a level 16 or above and reading at least 53 words per minute by the end of this school year.  Your child’s leveled reader books will let you know what level he/she is reading on and I will be writing in the agendas each week to let you know how many words per minute he/she is reading.  We must encourage our boys and girls to buckle down and work hard.   In math, we will be working on addition/subtraction facts, math rules, and applying rules.  I will be attending a reading conference in Charlotte on Feb. 23rd, so I will not be at school that day.  I hope to bring back many new ideas and incorporate them in your child’s learning process.  Thanks for all you do and have a great week!

It is very hard to believe that the school year is going by so quickly.  Your child’s “green reading books” will come home with the regularly assigned reading, as well as his/her Book Buddy Bag.  The Book Buddy Bag has your child’s leveled reader books in them and should be practiced daily.  This bag also contains a reading log that needs to be signed each day with the number of minutes that your child reads.  We want to encourage you to please listen to your child read for at least 15 minutes each day.  This practice is really paying off and your children look forward to receiving a prize for having their log signed.  We will read a story called, “The Kite,” and practice forming contractions and the long –i (CVCe spelling pattern). Please encourage your child to practice his/her spelling words each night.  The words are becoming more difficult and require a bit more effort.  In math, we will be working with weight, more than/less than, and comparison number stories.  We hope you have a wonderful week!  Thanks for your support!  Have a great weekend! Please sign and return your child’s report card if you have not done so.  Thanks!  Also, please be sure you are having your child read his/her leveled reader daily and sign his/her reading log.  This week, we will be working on the CVCe (consonant-long vowel-consonant-silent –e) spelling pattern with long –a.  Our spelling words will reflect this pattern.  We will also work on words with the final endings: nd, ng, and nk.  In math, we will work on place value (tens & ones), relations (greater than-less than), and exploring area, weight, and counting.  Thanks so much for your help in making this school year a successful one!  Have a great week!

Important Infomration and Reminders for the week of Jan. 3, 2012
Happy New Year!  I hope that everyone has a wonderful year this year.  I wanted to let you all know that I will NOT be sending home leveled reader books in your child's Book Buddy Bags due to the fact that we will be completing some mid-year assessments.  I WILL send home the bag so that you can record what your child reads each day on the reading log.  Also, your child should have his/her homework written in their agenda each day.  Please, don't for get to practice your Spelling Words (scrub, sprig, struck, split, drum, truck, plug, club, must, and grand) so that we will have great grades on our test on Friday.  If you have any questions about anything such as Parent Conference Days/Times or homework assignments for this week.  I am not sending home newsletters any longer (to save paper and copies) so we will need to communicate through the web site and/or agendas.  Thanks a bunch for understanding!  Half of the school year is over, so please continue to work with your child each day.

I hope you are all enjoying our fall weather.  We have finally had some cool days!  Please make sure that your child completes his/her homework each day.  Homework is practice for what we are learning during instructional time at school.  Also, if you would look at your child’s work on Mondays and have him/her correct any mistakes that they made; that will be helpful when he/she is assessed.  We will concentrate on silent letters (gn, wr, and kn) in Language Arts.  We will review the short sound of –e.  Some students are confusing the short –i and short –e sounds.  Please help us stress the difference between the two. In math, we will introduce the inch as a standard unit of length, practice measuring to the nearest inch, and estimate and measure the lengths of objects in inches.  Thanks so much.   Have a great week!
